Why I use Debian

Debian generally does not chase shiny new packages just because they exist. Packages are tested, dependencies are vetted, and releases tend to be boring in the best possible way.

I’d rather have software that works consistently for years than software that got updated three times this week.

apt is sane and predictable. Package management is one of those things you don’t think about until it becomes annoying. Debian’s package ecosystem is mature, well documented, dependency handling is generally excellent, rarely surprises you. Compared to some ecosystems where package managers feel bolted on, fragmented, or philosophically weird, Debian feels coherent.

It presents Linux as minimalism without being hostile. It doesn’t assume what you want. Some distros try to curate your experience aggressively. Debian mostly says, "Here's Linux. Build what you want." That appeals to people who like control without wanting to compile their own bootloader at 2 AM.

It has an enormous package repository, that saves time. Because Debian has been around forever, solutions exist. Search for a weird issue and you’ll often find Debian wiki entries, old mailing list discussions, forum posts, Stack Exchange answers, GitHub issues referencing Debian specifically. That matters.

Debian is the foundation for half the Linux world:

  • Ubuntu comes from Debian.

  • Mint (Ubuntu edition) traces back to Debian.

  • Proxmox uses Debian.

  • Countless appliances and server images build on Debian.

So learning Debian knowledge transfers well. You’re not learning some niche ecosystem.

Philosophy: free software and transparency... Even if you use non-free firmware (most people do), Debian’s roots matter. Historically Debian has cared deeply about, openness, software freedom, transparent governance, community stewardship. It doesn’t feel like a product first and a community second.

I’ve used other distros. Some are slicker. Some are newer. Some are more opinionated about how Linux should be experienced.

Debian just feels like home.

I know where things are. I trust apt. I trust the release process. I trust that when I update my machine it probably won’t decide to reinvent itself overnight. At this point in life, I value reliability over novelty.

Debian is boring.

I mean that as a compliment.
